How It Works

Extractive summarization selects the most important sentences from the original text based on scoring:

Score = word_frequency + position_bonus + length_bonus + title_word_bonus

The algorithm works in four steps:

  1. Tokenize — Split text into individual sentences using punctuation boundaries.
  2. Score words — Count word frequencies across the text, filtering out common stop words. Words that appear more often are considered more important.
  3. Score sentences — Each sentence receives a composite score based on the sum of its word frequencies, its position in the text (earlier sentences get a bonus), sentence length (very short or very long sentences are penalized), and overlap with title words.
  4. Select top sentences — The highest-scoring sentences are selected up to the target length, then reordered by their original position to preserve readability.
